Lots of attention has been given to pair programming since the inception of eXtreme Programming. While pairing developers is an effective technique for improving code quality and sharing knowledge, pairing developers and testers is equally useful but a lot less understood. This presentation will discuss how to effectively pair developers and testers during development and the benefits of doing so. The cultural and technical aspects of dev/test pairing will be discussed as both are critical to making it work. Specific examples will be given for how developers and testers can pair to improve test planning, unit testing, exploratory testing, acceptance testing, and test automation. A justification for having dev/test pairs do pair programming will be discussed as well. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of how to successfully implement dev/test pairing.
